Five Animals Most Affected by Climate Change

One of the most significant issues we’re currently facing is the effects of climate change. Humans are not the only ones affected by the transformation of the world’s temperature. Additionally, plants and animals are also affected by this phenomenon. In the case of animals, these effects could change their natural lifecycle entirely, possibly leading to endangerment and even extinction. Here are five animals most affected by climate change:

1. Polar Bears

Many of us are already aware that the increase in the earth’s temperature is affecting the arctic. Rising water levels due to shrinking sea ice affect the bear’s way of hunting and transversing places for foraging. Other arctic animals like walruses and seals are also affected by climate change.

2. Salmon

Salmon are also affected by climate change. They require cold and fast-flowing streams and rivers to spawn while acting as a food source for humans and other animals.

Unfortunately, higher temperatures and drought issues lead to less water in summer streams, upsetting the salmon’s delicate life balance. Additionally, streams with temperatures greater than 64 degrees Fahrenheit can start stressing salmon, while 70 degrees is enough to kill them.

3. Moose

The Northern American moose is a staple in countries like the United States and Canada. Unfortunately, warmer temperatures can affect a moose’s life, making them susceptible to thriving ticks. The reason? Milder and fewer winters lead to an increased number of winter ticks. As a result, these ticks feed on a moose’s blood, affecting its immune system, which results in death.

4. Puffins

Puffins are just some of the cutest animals in the world. Their colorful bills and resemblance to penguins, another cute animal, are also experiencing population decline. The reason? Warmer seas yield fewer fish, making it harder for these birds to find food sources.

5. Bees

Bees are undoubtedly the world’s best pollinators as they play an integral part in the biodiversity we need for survival. Bees are excellent pollinators, paving the way for many plants and food crops to reproduce.

Unfortunately, climate change affects them in multiple ways. For instance, hotter temperatures mean more parasites, thus enabling farmers to depend on pesticides. These pesticides can affect their system, especially if they’re foraging food from plants and other crops.

Additionally, environmental disasters, wildfires, and floods destroy multiple crops, making it hard for bees to find viable food sources. The inconsistent seasons also make it hard for bees to find food sources since certain flowers may bloom at unstable rates.

Takeaway: Humans aren’t the only ones affected by climate change. The longer we allow this phenomenon to continue, the more vulnerable animals and plant species become.
